There is no denying it, sometimes attorneys don’t need to be involved in every aspect of the case. And with many attorneys’ hourly rates exceeding that which the average person can afford, the choice to represent yourself seems like the only option. But there is an alternative: retain an attorney for those parts of the case where an attorney is really needed and do what you can yourself.
This new wave of legal services, often called “unbundled” legal services, may be the most pragmatic approach when funds are limited. Some cost-saving alternatives include, but aren’t necessarily limited to, the following: i) hire an attorney with a limited scope to his/her duties, ii) use the attorney as review counsel only and/or iii) have the attorney take over specific duties like the drafting of your separation agreement, parenting plan, financial affidavit, etc. or assisting you in discovery review/production.
